Trademarks and logos

Some labels concentrate on animal testing and do not take in account the composition of their products. This is because too many brands still use animal products and that the labels are afraid to be limited in the number of products made ava

This table shows you the ONLY labels  (in France) that mention animal testing in their guidelines. ALL the other labels, including AB (Agriculture Biologique), do not guarantee that their products or ingredients have not been tested on animals.

These guidelines were accessible to the public in march 2010. If you know about any changes since then, please contact us so that we can modify this table.

The ticks and crosses show you if the guidelines of a label "guarantee"  or not the different specificities.  Even if in a label does not guarantee that a product is vegan (non-tested and without animal ingredients), you can check the ingredients for yourself.

File 556The Vegan Society

The Vegan logo is a registered trademark and is a symbol of their Vegan 'Animal-free' Standards.

It appears on thousands of animal free products and is displayed by catering businesses, that have been registered with The Vegan Society.

File 579

Leaping bunny

"The Coalition for Consumer Information on Cosmetics’ (CCIC) Leaping Bunny Program administers a cruelty-free standard and the internationally recognized Leaping Bunny Logo for companies producing cosmetic, personal care, and household products. The Leaping Bunny Program provides the best assurance that no new animal testing is used in any phase of product development by the company, its laboratories, or suppliers."

This label is very serious and performs regular audits.

In Northern America, the Coalition for Consumer Information on Cosmetics, eight national animal protection groups banded together, promotes the logo and standard « Corporate Standard of Compassion for Animals ».

In Europe, the Coalition Européenne pour mettre fin à l'Expérimentation animale (l'ECEAE) administers the label and standards « Humane Cosmetics Standard » and « Humane Household Products Standard ».

  • An entire company that gets certified after promising to stop animal testing for all its products, starting from a fixed date.
  • The composition of the products have no restrictions. REF

One Voice

One Voice, is the french representative of the ECEAE (seen above). This association created it's own label that certifies that a complete range of products have not been tested on animals.

An independent body awards the certification at the end of an often long procedure to check the traceability and integrity of all components in a product. The One Voice label guarantees that neither the product, nor its ingredients have been tested on animals.

  • The composition of the products are not subject to restrictions but One Voice  specifies which of its certified products are vegan.

BDIH
Certified Natural Cosmetic

This label was created by a german association, the BDIH. Criterias to get the certification « Certified Natural Cosmetic » are very strict and only apply to products, not to an entire brand. In order to bare the logo, a brand needs to have at least 60% of its products conform to the label.

  • No animal testing may be performed or commissioned when end products are manufactured, developed or tested.
  • Raw materials that were not available on the market before 01.01.1998 may only be used if they have not been tested on animals. This does not include animal testing performed by third parties who neither were ordered/prompted by the ordering party to do so nor are associated to the ordering party by company law or by contract.
  • It is prohibited to use raw materials obtained from dead vertebrates (e.g. spermaceti, terrapin oil, mink oil, marmot fat, animal fats, animal collagen or living cells).

Charte Cosmébio

To get the label BIO (organic) cosmetic or ECO (ecological) cosmetic, a product must be certified either by "Ecocert" or "Qualité France". These independant control bodies are not as strict as the Charte Cosmébio would like to be. See table above.

Label Cosmétique BIO (organic)File 570

Label Cosmétique ECO (Ecological)File 572

Cosmébio's guidelines on their website:

  • Prohibition on the testing of animals
  • Use of alternative methods of products evaluation (toxicity, effectiveness)

Cosmébio's 2001 downloadable guidelines do not even mention animal testing!

File 574

Ecocert

Independant control body.

  • It is forbidden to test finished products on animals but nothing is said about the ingredients. The latter may have been tested.
  • Some animal by-products, not part of the animals, may be used (milk products, egg products and wool, bee-hive products, etc). [guidelines pages 17, 28]

File 606Qualité France

Independant control body.

Not very clear.
Qualité France says that it makes sure that ingredients and finished products have not been tested on live animals [cells or animal tissue permitted?] but the audits are only done for the finished products.
